Chances are you don’t need a ticking timepiece.

You can check the time on your smartphone, tablet or laptop.

But today’s watches are less about being practical and more about being stylish.

Think of them as another must-have accessory.

“This past year, the trend seems to be the novelty of having a watch,” said Karen Reiss Staub, owner of The Watchmaker’s Daughter, especially among younger people.

Staub said that watches, in general, are getting larger and she sees more women purchasing unisex designs with bigger faces. She said ladies can get smaller leather straps or have metal links removed if they want to wear a men’s watch.

“You want it so it’s not flopping around on your wrist and getting all scratched up,” she said.

While yellow gold is definitely making a comeback, Staub said she sells more white gold timepieces in her 22 N. Beaver St., York, shop.

She advises buyers to think long term and examine their needs — a nurse might require a second hand and older eyes will find a white dial with numbers easier to read, for example.

In general, Staub said battery-operated watches are low maintenance.

Metal bands could last a lifetime, while leather bands might need to be replaced after a year of wear and tear, she said. Watch batteries also last about a year, but the popular Citizen Eco-Drive line recharges from the sun and has a battery that lasts up to 10 years.

“The biggest thing to be aware of is the warranty and how serviceable they are,” she said.
